He had only seen the stable once while driving by, and while it might not have been smart to get a position at a place he'd never visited, teaching lessons was what he wanted to do and there weren't any reports of crazy murderers in the area. The problem was that he'd gotten the job before he moved his horse in. It wasn't a bad business decision; the staff had obviously seen him and Austin at shows and were quite impressed. Granted, it was hard not to be impressed when the same pair won the Regular Working Hunters and the Adult Equitation Classic. What can he say, he learned from the best.
He shifted into park and swung out of the cab of the pickup truck. Sidney threw the trailer doors open and greeted the big bay gelding who had managed to fall asleep during the short journey. The man squeezed behind Austin's butt and unclipped his lead from the side, then backed him out of the trailer. Really, Austin could probably load and unload himself just as well as Sidney did, and did indeed step right up into the trailer without any guidance. The trust between the two was impeccable.
"You won't fit through there, huh, buddy," Sidney muttered upon seeing the front door. While it was plenty tall enough for a lanky Thoroughbred, Austin was quite a bit wider and would probably scrape himself if Sidney tried it. The man shut the trailer doors and check the brakes again before walking with his horse in tow around to the side of the barn. There was a horse door here, wide enough for four or five Austins walking in together, and Sidney bodily slid the door open.
The light inside was dim, but Sidney walked in anyways and led Austin down the aisleway. If he knew the owners, he would have just stuck Austin in any old stall. The gelding didn't have any vices; he was a star hunter, forgodssakes. But Sidney didn't know any of these horses (except for some show names - but without braids and show tack on, he might as well have not known at all) and didn't know what would happen if he put his sweet gelding next to a random mare who turned out to be the bitch of the barn. Nor did he like the prospects.
So Sidney went wandering down the aisle, leading Austin, searching for some authority figure to ask. In a few days, he'd be the person to ask, but at the moment, he knew less than nothing.

no rose, no daisy can touch what i gothey i'm a wildflower, growin' in the sunshine------------------------------ soakin' up the way of life i was raised in. runnin' barefoot,
”Don’t you dare,” the words spilled freely from her mouth, the clear southern accent making its regal debut. A woman of only five feet and five inches glared defiantly up at her Thoroughbred stallion. His blood bay form looking at her curiously as if he did nothing wrong and was perfectly innocent. Her brown eyes met his, seeing the faint spark of anticipating. He tugged at the lead rope and immediately she tugged back. There was no way her 16.3 hand high horse was going to boss her around. She heard him give a faint snort, willing himself to accept the demands of his rider. She nodded slightly and smiled at him. He usually was never so frightened to back down a ramp. Perhaps it was the place he was unused to more than anything. She murmured soft words to him, speaking in a gentle voice, encouraging him to go down the ramp. To her pleasure, Doctor Love obeyed. Steadily, he backed out and whickered happily when he was released from the metal trailer that was latched firmly to a Ford pickup truck.
He inhaled the new air briskly and whinnied loudly, beckoning to all that surrounded this place. Azaria laughed gently but noticed his prancing. Why she was in love with the hot headed horses was unknown, but to Azaria she knew how they ticked. She stroked him gently, walking him towards the barn. Love stopped abruptly and looked back at the trailer, whickering frantically. Two separate whinnies responded to him and Azaria sighed. ”They ain’t goin’ nowhere, Love,” she said quietly and the stallion seemed satisfied with that answer. She proceeded to walk once more and he was at her heels, nickering to her excitedly and she nodded her head, smiling as if she understood what he was talking about. Doctor Love held a firm hold on her heart for they had forged a strong bond, and an understanding for one another. He challenged her and he learned from her. She’d rather have a horse she could teach and for them to teach her in return. Maybe that was just her.
She rounded the corner, feeling her own anxiety build inside her. It was a new place, a new town, and a new state. She glanced at Doctor and shrugged. ”Looks like we ain’t gonna be seein’ Kentucky for a while. You read for that, boy,” she inquired and was immediately answered by an joyous whinny of delight. She laughed again, her eyes sparking with the laughter. She listened to his hoof beats against the gravel and entered the barn. She glanced up, meeting the eyes of someone else with a Thoroughbred. In comparison, her horse to his was considerably different. She smiled at him easily but it wasn’t before long that her attention was dragged onto Doctor. He inhaled the air angrily, catching scent of a gelding and a man. He hated men. He whinnied ferociously, announcing them with clear irritancy. He half-reared and Ria firmly tugged him down. ”Steady. They ain’t gonna hurt you.” She stroked his quivering face but his eyes were locked upon the duo. She gave his shoulder a firm tap and he glanced at her and gave a withdrawn huff. She won… She always won. She approached them with confidence and smiled at the man. ”Are you as lost as I am,” she asked him with a small laugh. She was new, clearly and certainly not from these parts. She was a country girl and it showed from her voice to her clothes. She was merely wearing jeans, a plaid shirt, and paddock boots; however, she pulled off the look fairly well. ”I’m Azaria, by the way. Just gotta job as an instructor,” she nodded firmly before letting her eyes rest on his Thoroughbred. ”He’s a looker. Glad to see someone else loves these hot headed horses enough to buy one,” she laughed gently, turning her attention back to Doctor who nudged her impatiently, snorting almost threateningly at the man and his horse before him.

Whoever it was had a loud horse. Even Austin, who usually maintained an "oblivious" worldview, nickered softly to the unknown horse. Sidney stroked the gelding's neck lightly and continued on his journey down the aisle. He paused often to look at the stalled horses, recognizing a few names but unable to place them with riders or disciplines.
He registered the opening of the door and the sound of a horse being led in, but still, Sidney was more than a little surprised when a loud, aggressive whinny filled the barn. Austin snorted loudly in response, and Sidney spun around to face the woman and her horse. A stallion, about as tall as Austin, but narrower. Probably a Thoroughbred - that explained the loudness. "Yeah! I don't even know where to put Austin. Not that he minds. He'd make friends with a mountain lion," Sidney remarked. His statement was reinforced by Austin "making friends" with the pony he was parked next to. The pony didn't seem particularly friendly, however, and when Austin nickered, the little chestnut devil tried to take a chunk out of Austin's nose. The Hanoverian squealed and sidestepped quickly, then nudged Sidney to make sure the man had seen the horrors contained in that stall. "Don't be a wuss! You're twice his size!" Sidney exclaimed, punching Austin in a bro-like manner.
"Anyways, I'm Sidney, this is Austin. Hey! I'm an instructor too! I teach hunters and equitation, what about you?" Sidney said, looking her over once. From the South, if the accent and clothes were anything to go by. Granted, "the South" for Sidney meant anywhere south of Chicago. In truth, she could be from anywhere between the Florida Keys and Indianapolis.
Sidney glanced over to Austin to make sure they were talking about the same "hot-headed" horse. "Austin? Hot? Nah, he looks Thoroughbred, but he's a Hanoverian. Looks like an Absolut baby, though, don't he? He's a little wider and not as flighty. Slower and less handy, too, but I don't mind. Just means he rides like a tank!" Sidney laughed. "I like Thoroughbreds, just not so much in hunter classes. Jumpers and eventing's where they excel. See, Austin here couldn't get through a really technical or fast course without embarrassing himself. But put him on a regular working course and damn if he doesn't jump it by himself. Loves to jump, hates to go faster than a lope." Sidney chuckled again, scratching the wither Austin offered him. They had a bond, too, just more of a brother-from-another-mother (and, in fact, another species) bond than a working partnership.

no rose, no daisy can touch what i gothey i'm a wildflower, growin' in the sunshine------------------------------ soakin' up the way of life i was raised in. runnin' barefoot,
Love was easily excited and it showed through his slight colt-like personality, especially when it came to mares. He lurched forwards, dragging Azaria with him. She yanked backwards, firmly digging her feet into the aisle way and she glared at Love who whinnied his displeasure. She shook her head and sighed. Sometimes she wagered she might as well just geld him but even she and her father saw some promise in him. He might produce top quality foals but almost every horse lover out there thought the same thing. Ria just so happened to be sucked into that realm but she was content with him. He challenged her just like the rest of her horses and she enjoyed that. All the frustrations were just small stepping stones towards achieving more unity and perhaps success. Success didn’t mean much to her but the bond meant the world.
The man acknowledged her and she was happy that he actually talked to her rather than ignoring her like some might have done. He seemed friendly and open which only brought Azaria into feeling more and more comfortable. She could strike up a conversation with almost anyone but those who talked in a dead pan voice bored her. It was like talking to a doorknob. She smiled and gave a small laugh at his comment. She glanced at Love from the corner of her eye. She was apprehensive when she saw him already sizing up the man and his horse. She sighed quietly. ”Wish I could say the same for Love here. He gives everyone a run for their money,” she spoke, hearing him nicker at the mention of his name. She laughed as his horse moved to the side, nudging his rider to ensure that he saw what the tiny pony almost did to him. If Love was where Austin was, he would have put up a fit. Thank gosh he was more interested in Ria’s shirt right now. He was sniffing at it before he rubbed up against her, using her as his own personal scratching post. She pushed him away playfully, grinning. ”I guess that’s somewhat better than all my hats,” she murmured towards him and he nickered bashfully. All her cowgirl hats for competitions had his teeth marks in the brim. She never really bought any more new hats; Love would just destroy them anyway.
”Nice to meet you, Sidney,” Ria said brightly, smiling before pushing Love away as he nudged her, attempting to turn her attention back on him. He was a demanding and possessive stallion. ”I teach reigning and Western pleasure,” she replied to him, shrugging. Azaria was comfortable in almost every section of riding for she had horses that did English and Western but her mare was an all-rounder. She observed him openly. He was tall (which really wasn’t that big of a deal... Everyone was taller than her) but he seemed nice. It was a change from the people that stared at her out of disgust for either her accent or just because she didn’t fit in to what they thought women should be like. At least he knew to keep a conversation going which was a plus. She turned to meet his gaze as he talked about his horse.
A small blush began to form on her cheeks as Ria realized she was wrong. Serenade had a little bit of Hanoverian in her but most wouldn’t guess it by looking at her. She looked mainly Lusitano which made her a looker in the ring. ”Down where I come from, most of the people just own Quarters. Then you’ve got crazy people like me who own Thoroughbreds.” She gave a small laugh which intensified slightly at his remark of his horse riding like a tank. She leaned up against Love’s side that seemed beyond content that she was. He lowered his head and nuzzled her cheek fondly and blew on her face before tugging on her shirt. She glanced at him before firmly wriggling the bottom of her shirt from his grasp. He tossed his head and snorted, unhappy that she had taken away his amusement. ”You should see Love in the show jumping ring. He’s young but dang! He might just put the older competitors to shame one day,” she smiled and glanced outside, listening attentively to ensure that Serenade wasn’t lashing out at her trailer. Pride would never unless he was ridiculously bored and felt as if he were ignored. She turned her eyes back onto Sidney and placed her hand on Love’s shoulder. ”Do you own any other horses or just Austin,” she inquired curiously.
