Rafael is a very selfless person. He will step out of his way to help others in need before helping himself. Even if he’s having a massive issue that needs to be solved, he will listen to people vent and resolve their problems before solving his. He is incredibly caring and gentle. Rafael is a bubbly and cheery person. Basically, he makes it damn hard to not like him. He is a very inviting fellow and so people can be lured easily into being friends with him. Carrying on a conversation with Rafael is as easy as making a sandwich. He can be very random, bouncing around from topic to topic, but that is merely due to his tendency to have a short attention span. He can focus on things but most will see he likes to move his hands a lot, which aids in him focusing on what he needs to do. He has bundles of energy and that outgoing feeling that most find themselves comfortable in his presence.

Rafael is an open book to the tee. You ask him anything, and he’ll answer you straight out. Nothing will be hidden from anyone, and due to him speaking in public, he is highly at ease explaining his “disease” and talking about anything in general. It certainly doesn’t take long to gain his trust, but even this has bitten him in the rear. He is genuine, sensitive, and honest, and won’t ever let a lie slip from his mouth. He’s a bad liar and gets nervous if he tries to so it’s a fail. Making people laugh by his child-like innocence and sometimes his stupidity is his specialty. If you’re ever sad, you come see him, and he’ll be – not only a shoulder to cry on – but he’ll wipe your tears away and make you giggle for hours on end. He’ll voice his opinion on any subject, and if you’re wearing or say something offensive, he will let you know. Oh, and if you’re hot, he’ll let you know too. He is well put together and a lovable person who can be there through everything if needed. Rafael is very on-message on a certain topic pertaining to his sexual preference and what he lives with.

Rafael Mackay Allighiero was born in Miami, Florida. His father was an uptight and reserved man, and his mother was the opposite. He grew up in a large family of five siblings – Rafael being the last. His mother had had a surgery to no longer have kids, but she got pregnant with Rafael. Despite the doctors telling her it would be dangerous to have him, he was brought into this world on February 12 feet first. He never did anything ordinary or normal. He was a bit of a miracle baby, though growing up he never thought of that. He was too modest. Rafael often relied on his mother for everything needed, and even though there were four other kids, she gave them all equal amounts of love. It was often loud in the Allighiero house hold, but it was the sounds of home.

Rafael was sent to a private school with all-boys when he was old enough. And though his family was struggling with finances, they made it work. When Rafael was at the young age of nine or ten, he was raped by the principal of the school. And he was one out of hundreds of boys who were put through it as well. He was taken advantage of, but he was too young to understand. When he arrived home from that very same day, his mother had questioned him about the newly found bumps and bruises, but he covered it up by merely saying he was playing. At the age of thirteen, he began to look at the other boys differently, and began to fantasize about them. It was when he had turned seventeen that his older sister had found a love note by a man named Luke. Rafael had always been gone, and that was when his sister found it.

When he got back home from Luke’s house, his sister confronted him by putting a newspaper article about lesbians on the refrigerator. Rafael defended himself but soon broke down. His sister knew then that her brother was gay. When he and his entire family sat around their small t.v. set, and the news was on. And on came something on the topic of the rising rates of gay and lesbian couples. His brothers teased him due to his very proper fashion sense, and so took this as an opportunity to playfully to tease him that he should just be gay. A little upset with this, he retorted “What if I am one of them?” It then spiraled downwards from there. With his family knowing that he was gay, which had explained so much in the past years, they were torn. Him trying on dresses, and fascinated with the male physique, it was all starting to fall together. It all began to make sense.

On February 3, merely days before his eighteenth birthday, Rafael had donated blood at Red Cross. He went home thinking that all was well, but at 8:52 p.m. he received a call that he was tested positive for HIV/AIDS. His family was heart broken, and Rafael slipped into a short depression. He quickly dragged himself out of it, and ever since he was seventeen he has been a HIV/AIDS Activist, and has traveled pretty much all over the world. Now at the age of twenty-six, and surpassing the few months he was given left to live, he remains active in reaching out to those who are interested to hear his story, and with that often comes people who strongly dislike gay/lesbian people. He keeps in touch with his mother and other siblings, but his father has never spoken to him since that night when he came out that he was gay. And had in fact, told Rafael that he was dead to him. When he turned nineteen, he was more than eager to leave the negativity of Miami to come to New York for the majority of Miami at that time looked down upon lesbians and gays. He had hoped that the people here were more accepting than back home, and so far he was right. Now Rafael lives as a single, gay man living with HIV/AIDS for seven years, but he’s eager to get back into informing the people of New York of his story, if they let him.
