Why had he chosen such an unruly career? He had been grooming his mare Stella when she decided it would be comical to kick out at him. Let’s just say the mare has good aim; she nailed him straight in the knee. Bent over in pain and shouting numerous words we won't repeat, Travis gave the bay mare a piece of his mind. He gave her quite a strong smack on the shoulder, the obnoxious mare he absolutely hated to love had to be disciplined. Grasping his knee, Travis limped in front of the mare, clipping on her lead rope. He unsnapped her from the cross ties and dragged her towards her stall. In one last attempt to drive Travis wild she nipped at his hand. He quickly pulled his hand away and drug the mare through the stall door. He slipped off her halter and slid the door shut with a rather loud bang. He peeked through the bars and watched as the satisfied mare munched happily on her hay. “You better believe you are getting the workout of your life tonight,” he mumbled to the proud mare. He truly hated that horse, but then again she was so good under saddle.
Travis had planned on lunging Stella but the fact that his knee was killing him convinced him to put their training session on hold. Limping towards the cross ties, Travis picked up Stella’s grooming box and stored it in the small tack room. He quickly swept up before heading towards the lounge; at a significantly slower pace than usual. He pushed open the door to reveal the nicely sized sitting room complete with kitchenette and flat screen TV. Pain shot through his knee as he pulled the door shut behind him.
Travis hobbled toward the small fridge. Opening the top door, foggy frost poured out at him as he searched for an icepack. The blue pack was hidden beneath a box of old popsicles and a make-it-yourself pizza. Grabbing the pack and a towel, Travis managed to make it to the sofa. He slowly collapsed onto the green cushions. Kicking off his boots and pulling up his jean leg, Kane revealed the battered knee; it was already starting to bruise. Pressing the towel containing the icepack on his skin, Travis winced. Lying back on the couch he let the pain run its course as his knee slowly became numb from the cold pack.
Just what he needed, as if he wasn’t run down enough. He had already been having problems with his left leg recently, a flair up from an old riding injury. He remembered that day he got it. That mare was unlike any mare he had ever ridden before. Her gates were smooth, her jump immaculate. It was a real shame that she never got to see the show ring again. Travis had learned upon waking up in the hospital that the mare had to be put down due to her injuries. It brought tears to his eyes. Sure, the mare hadn’t been his, however, he almost felt that the accident that took her life, and nearly his, had been all his fault.

Her body was aching all over. Dirt stains clung to her white t-shirt and were highly visible on her blue jeans. Her paddock boots shuffled across the ground as she grumbled something in an irritated tone. Serenade, the mare beside the girl, walked with a look of obvious happiness but had taints of respect and submission. Serenade was her usual bitchy self when Azaria decided to ride her. Everything that Ria asked was ignored and a few times, she flung the five feet and five inch girl off her back to greet the dirt in the arena countless times. Surely, any unsuspecting rider would see imprints of her body every so often. Ria had a seat of steel but her stubborn mare would never give up until her rider hit the ground. She would do everything humanly possible to do so and during those fits, Ria landed on her feet. When her mind started to stray away into a dream-like state did Serenade take advantage of that.
She angrily rubbed the dirt off her face, and still continued her incoherent grumblings about the mare. The gray mare snorted, her ears flicking back and forth as her owner put her in the cross-ties and did away with her tack. Ria did show Serenade what for in the arena and it was then that the arrogant mare feel her ego become bruised. She then came around and obeyed her rider but today wasn’t her day. Ria hadn’t gotten much sleep the previous night. The sounds of New York and a new place always interfered with her sleep. Back home, she would have fallen asleep to the sound of horses and crickets. Now, she had to deal with sirens, obnoxious drivers laying on their horns, and the hustle and bustle with the city that never sleeps. Kentucky was looking mighty good right about now but she wouldn’t go back unless it was to visit her father.
After brushing her mare, she put her in her stall and wandered towards the lounge. Ria needed a break anyhow and to just sit back and soothe her aching muscles. She attempted to brush off the dirt from her t-shirt but to no avail; it just looked even more horrible in the long run. What a day to pick a white t-shirt. She rolled her brown eyes lightly as she strode with purposeful steps towards the door of the lounge. She paused to remove the dirt off her pants with success and opened the door only to find a man sitting down, icing his knee. She let her nose crinkle slightly. She’d rather be tossed into the dirt than have an injury to her knee any day. She closed the door shut and nodded towards him. ”Rough day,” she asked, politely. She turned around towards the fridge and grabbed her water bottles. She saw in the faint and distorted image of her reflection in the bottle that there was a large dirt mark across the left of her face. Ria sat down across from him in a chair set in the corner as she removed the dirt from her face.
She pushed back a piece of blond hair behind her ear as she slumped into the chair. A look of relief crossed her features as there was no need to move anymore. Azaria turned back towards the man. She might as well introduce herself; she wasn’t the rude and prissy type anyhow. ”I’m Azaria,” she stated, offering him a small smile before sipping at her water.

After several minutes of sitting on the couch it wasn't only his knee that was hurting. With his free hand, Travis rubbed his forhead. He could feel a headache starting to develope. Great. Just what he needed. On top of all that, he couldn't go home. Three lessons were scheduled for this evening and he couldn't cancel, he never cancelled. Although, he was starting to concider it. Softening the pressure he was putting on the ice pack, a shot of pain ran all the way up his leg. Looking down at his now purple knee he mumbled to himself, "Perfect, just perfect,"
Travis leaned his head back and closed his eyes, propping his leg on the coffee table. Seconds later he heard the door open and close. He slowly opened his right eye to see who it was. A blonde girl whom he had never seen strolled through the door and opened the fridge. She spoke in his direction as she grabbed a water bottle, "rough day,". Her words brought a smile to his face. "Something like that," he chuckled "my mare thought it would be comical to test her kicking abilities, let's just say she has good aim" he finished, directing his eyes towards his discolored knee. He raised an eyebrow at the girl as he took her in. She was literally covered in dirt, obviously from a tumble. With another chuckle he repeated her words, "Rough day?"
Travis' blue eyes followed the girl from the fridge to the chair opposite him. Dirt stained her t-shirt and a streak ran across her cheek. The site brought a smile to his face. Atleast he wasn't the only one who could take a fall. She introduced herself as Azaria. "Nice to meet you," Travis started before ajusting the pack on his knee. "I'm Travis," he smiled widely, pearly whites shining through his lips. He laughed before asking the question that was bugging him since she arrived, "So, what happened to you? Took a tumble I'd guess," He wasn't trying to be nosey, he was just curious. He remembered the rush of riding a difficult horse. Then again, he remembered how great riding was in general. He hadn't ridden in three years now, it seemed so much longer than that. Sure he missed it, that was apparent. However, fear sometimes gets the best of us. Fear is what kept Travis grounded.

Azaria was fairly crazy in a good way, especially since she had become attached to the mare she had been riding for a couple of years. Needless to say, she was probably even more high strung that her Thoroughbred stallion. It truly didn’t matter to Ria, she loved a challenge and in all honesty, she had received a few. Her Thoroughbred was the epitome of what his breed should be like. He was a leggy creature with the ability to soar over jumps in textbook form, but still held the desire and passion to stretch his legs into a full-fledged gallop with Ria on his back. He was a wild one but she adored him. Right now, it was a love/hate relationship with Serenade. She was so intent in breaking Azaria’s spirits that it just kept her going. She was a stubborn woman so it didn’t surprise her that she butted heads with the mare. Just right now she was sore but never regretting her decision to purchase her.
She had settled into the chair in an almost slumped position. She didn’t want to move and felt as though she could submerge herself in ice cold water just to relieve herself even further. The thought brought chills to her arms and she sighed, wishing to just sink through the comfy chair even further. Her brown eyes flicked to his face as he smiled before answering. ”Good aim,” she echoed in question before she gave a soft laugh. ”She could have even better aim and aim for somewhere else.” Her laughter increased slightly before it started hurting too much to continue. ”You should be grateful.” A smile was on her lips as she nodded, attempting some sort of serious face but Ria was clearly teasing. It was in her personality to joke, smile, and laugh. Being serious only rolled around when the situation called for it and this one didn’t seem to be serious. She followed his gaze to his bruised knee and cringed out of sympathy pain. ”Well, that’s a shiner,” she remarked, a slight southern accent poking through. She never was embarrassed by the accent she gained, but here in New York, people looked at her funny whenever she spoke. Ria ignored them whenever it strongly poked through but it was always there within every single word she would say.
Azaria’s eyes flicked towards her water bottle before he chuckled and questioned her. She shrugged before smiling. ”Oh yeah,” she smirked lightly in response. She fiddled with the cap of her bottle. She loved riding difficult horses and Serenade was just that. She was a perfect angel in the show ring, well, most of the time. It was being at the home arena that really ticked her off and she then showed her ugly sides. She was a looker though and she adored her through and through… Dirt and all. She let her head press against the back of the chair and she sighed, wanting to just exhale the soreness of her muscles. She could feel him studying her to a degree which didn’t bother her. She was incredibly comfortable in her own skin but she did shift her head to gaze at him in return. She wasn’t leering at the man but rather politely observing him in case she ran into him around the barn.
She must have looked like a disheveled mess with the variety of dirt stains marking her. She would probably look at herself in a mirror and laugh at how ridiculous she looked. Then again, Ria wasn’t exactly a typical “girl.” She could get dirt all over her and not care. ”Nice to meet you too, Travis,” she gave him another smile, mirroring his own in terms of her teeth being white as well. They were also straight due to the fact of suffering with braces for about a year. Ria recalled how she hated her father for it but now, she thanked him jokingly whenever they looked back on how angry she was at him. She smiled faintly at the thought before twisting around and looking at Travis again. ”I’ve taken more than one today,” she commented with a smile. ”My own mare decided it would be fun to have me meet the ground a few times. In all honesty, I think the ground and I are best friends.” She gave a grin before shifting slightly in her chair before she gave a grimace. That wasn’t the best idea. Pain rolled through her body and she exhaled tensely before rigidly sitting back into the chair. ”Hopefully, I don’t gotta cancel any lessons,” she murmured before looking back at him. ”Are you an instructor or a student,” she inquired curiously. It didn’t seem like Ria would be up and about any time soon and the need for good conversation was milling around in her.

Travis defiantly didn’t mind some company, especially good company that he could actually be himself around. Unfortunately, most of the people around here knew him all too well. His face had been stamped on the cover of every major newspaper in the area after his accident causing him to be better known than he would ever want. He could already tell that this girl hadn't been around long enough to catch the hot gossip on Mr. Travis Moore. He was thankful; he hated talking about the day that ruined his career three years ago. You'd think people would just move on. Although, he had been like a local celebrity even before the accident. He was this small town's Olympic hopeful. Now, he was just their Olympic failure.
Travis smiled widely at her comment about his mare's aim. He was actually surprised he'd never taken a hit to the place she was poking fun at, he wouldn't put it past Stella, that mare was too smart for her own good. "I guess I should be grateful," he said between his chuckling, “That wouldn't have been pretty," he smiled charmingly at his words. He shifted the ice pack again, momentarily glancing down at his battled knee. She spoke again; he heard a slight accent in her words. This only increased his hopes that she hadn’t been here long. "That's nothing, I've been through a lot worse, believe me." He immediately wished the words hadn't spilled from his lips, that phrase would only lead to curiosity on her part. He could only hope she wouldn't linger on it.
Travis leaned back into the cushions of the hunter green couch. The pain in his knee was starting to ease but the pounding in his head was starting to increase. He hated headaches; they were just downright annoying. He had them so often that they hardly interrupted his day to day life anymore but they were still painful. He took Advil everyday, doctor’s orders, but they hardly seemed to do much. Maybe it was time for another doctor visit; Travis put that idea into his memory. He must remember to do that when he got home later tonight. Turning his attention back on his new found company; Travis smiled as she recalled her “rough day.” He laughed again at her comment about her and the ground being best friends.
“Those mares,” Travis said shaking his head, “They’ll give you hell, but you love them anyways. Ah well, can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without ‘em.” He paused, and then smiled teasingly, “typical women.” He hoped Azaria would catch the hint of sarcasm in his words, if not, he knew he was in for it. He kept a teasing smile plastered to his face.
Instructor or rider? How Travis wished he could be both. The idea of getting back on a horse absolutely terrified him. He didn’t know what it was. I mean they always say when you fall off a horse you have to get right back on. However, Travis didn’t have that choice for a whole year. I guess all that time made him even more wary of mounting up again. Just think about it, riders put themselves in so much danger when they ride. You never really have complete control over your team mate. Maybe Travis had too much time to think that over when he was recovering. He’s now been cleared for twenty months and has yet to place a foot in the iron. “I teach jumpers," he said hoping that his life story wouldn’t come to her when she put the name and discipline together. “What about you?”

Azaria had been here for less than a week and how the days seemed to crawl on past. She’d usually be up and about helping her father train the new Thoroughbreds that would come in. It had always been the two of them to keep the barn running like clock work. Since she had moved here, wanting a new start and to immerse herself with unfamiliar faces, she found herself missing home. Well, more specifically, her father. Ria’s mother had left when she was pretty young and even now she had a hard time trying to figure out how she looked. It didn’t bother her in the least. She had always been right next to him wherever he went and now she was further north. New York was a bit of a city but she needed a new place to be and well, she knew no one here except for a few. Others just looked at her oddly at her clothes and how she wasn’t prim and proper like some of the snobbier riders but Ria was fine with how she was. She was never going to change herself to “fit in.”
She looked at him, smiling largely at her remark. At least someone got her sense of humor. Ria laughed at what he said and she smiled in return. ”You wouldn’t have even made it in here if that happened,” she commented lightly. She had seen her father get wailed in that particular place every so often. The poor man would just writhe on the ground and she’d drag him carefully to the house where he would ice the place for hours until he could move again and suffer through the pain. She was lucky she was a girl. Travis was speaking again and she refocused on him. Curiosity glinted through her eyes, flickering across her face as she studied him. There was something of unease as he spoke about it, as though he were reluctant to even have shared it in the first place. Ria wasn’t the type of person to press another into sharing their personal lives until they felt comfortable, and by the looks of it, he wasn’t. Instead, she nodded and shrugged hesitantly. ”I guess we’ve all got our stories,” she tested out the words cautiously as if it was the wrong thing to say but she let the sentence slip out. She had been through worse herself, and especially with exercising Thoroughbreds on the track, she had seen a lot and felt a lot of pain. No matter how excruciating it had been, Ria always managed to get back on even when the other staff was screaming at her to stop and take a break. She worked through the pain and only proved herself to be tough, but as soon as she would come home from work she would be icing whatever was hurt.
She never really liked it when people saw her in pain. It just made her feel vulnerable and that was something she wasn’t used to. There was a slight distant look in her eyes before his voice drew her back into reality. Ria watched him shake his head, speaking about mares. She nodded in silent agreement but then a teasing smile passed onto his lips. She stopped nodding and stared at him. A hint of sarcasm lingered to his words and she smirked. There was a small laugh before she spoke up. ”What would you men do without us?” She shook her head slightly, mocking a look of utter sadness but that typical smirk rested on her lips. ”Ya’ll would be awfully bored that’s for sure.” Her voice was teasing and playful which was clear with the laughter that accompanied it. Ria’s friends back home were typically all males due to the fact that she felt more comfortable around them. They wouldn’t gossip and spread around foolish rumors, and would rather keep to themselves. They would speak about occasionally gross things but Ria would end up walking off knowing that they would probably get carried away.
Ria never read up on newspapers or magazines. She would be too busy immersed in riding and horses to even be able to sit down and read. She did hate reading them though. Just the fact that they were poking their noses in everybody else’s business; it was disgusting really. The truth was normally always twisted and blown out of proportion, thus, she stayed away from those types of reading materials. Hell, the world could be coming to an end and Ria wouldn’t even know about it. People lied and she hated it, she could handle the truth as with everyone else in the world. He taught jumpers and Ria smiled. She loved competing in that circuit, and occasionally did when she could spare the time. She smiled at Travis before glancing down at her bottle. ”I teach team penning.” She sighed softly. ”I’m an all-rounder though, so I didn’t care where they placed me.” She grinned almost proudly as she sipped her water. It wasn’t long before the curiosity glimmered in her features. Sometimes she was too much of an open book that she didn’t like it but she had nothing to hide. She looked up at him from the across the room. ”How long have you been riding?” The innocent inquiry slipped from her lips as the curiosity still remained.

It was comforting to find someone with a sense of humor equal to that of himself. Azaria obviously didn’t care how people viewed her. She played the role of herself and no one else, Travis respected that. In all honesty, it was hard to find a girl like that nowadays. Most women around his age put on a mask to get men. Usually they tried to look hard core and slutty just to get some fun after hours. Travis was bigger than that. He knows when people are lying, he can just tell. Plus he’s seen the fakers so many times he knows the difference. He could already see that Azaria was genuine, something that was hard to find.
”I guess we’ve all got our stories,” boy was she right on that one. She didn’t even know the half of it but he could tell that there was curiosity building within her. Curiosity, it’s not a bad thing, just a touchy thing. He tried his best not to disclose much more about his past injuries.
Travis chuckled when she recalled his comparison between mares and women. He was so thankful that she got the sarcasm that coated his previous words. “We probably wouldn’t survive very long without women, for more than the obvious reasons” he smiled and continued, “ Boredom leads to new ideas,” he chuckled, raising his brow and continuing through his laughter, “ I’m not so sure I’d want to be involved in what those lonely men come up with,” he widened his eyes and smiled playfully at her. He had never really thought about what the world would be like without women, he could only imagine the sketchy things that would happen amongst the male only population. The thought in itself made him laugh.
She was an instructor as well. Team Penning. Travis nodded as she explained her rider status and smiled, “That’s cool, I never tried western,” he paused, rolling his eyes, “My parents trained jumpers so that’s what I grew up on,” Western riding had always been intriguing to him. He always thought it attracted him because of the speed games. Travis was a total speed demon when it came to jumpers, hence why he did so well, but always imagined trying out speed games on the flat. Maybe he would try it someday, no, wait, what was he saying? He would never ever try it, riding was in his past and he wasn’t going back now.
Travis sat contently on the couch. His knee was completely numb from the ice now and he flexed it a bit to re-gain feeling. The swelling had gone down but the coloring was still completely off compared to his sun kissed skin. Even in the winter, Travis was miraculously able to keep his summer tan. Although when he started wearing shorts in the summer you could tell that it had faded. Leaning his head back on the couch he was totally taken off guard by her next question, although he figured it would come eventually.
”How long have you been riding?”
Shit. That was the only word that came to his mind as the question buzzed around his head. There were two options here. Tell the truth or candy coat it. It was one of those moments when he was slightly lost for words. He stared at Azaria blankly. A smile slowly spread across his face. Ah what the hell, right? She was gonna find out eventually anyways. Honestly, Travis would much rather have her hear it from him than someone in town who would screw it up.
With a charming smile, Travis stood up slowly. He pulled his wallet from his back pocket and sat back down. As he rummaged through the contents of the leather wallet he began, “I have ridden since before I could walk, I come from a long line of horse trainers.” Travis continued to flip through his wallet, determined to find what he was looking for. “I stopped riding three years ago,” the words spilled from his lips right as he found what he was looking for. The tan fingers pulled a stack of three newspaper clippings from the wallets contents. Fanning them out, Travis read the headlines to himself: Small Town Boy’s Olympic Dreams Put on Hold, Olympic Dreams “Crushed”, Local Olympic Hopeful in Hospital. His eyes scanned the pictures that accompanied the words that showed the mare falling onto his helpless body. Travis rose from his seat on the couch and handed the clippings to Azaria before sitting back down.

Azaria had her eyes turned downward towards her water bottle, finding faint traces of dirt on her face. She gave a discreet smile at the image before glancing towards Travis. He was different from the sleazy type of people she came across almost frequently. It was refreshing to carry on a conversation with someone who knew how to keep it going. She didn’t quite like talking to people who didn’t; it was some strange pet peeve of hers. She was a friendly person, willing to strike up a chat with a stranger who knew nothing about you or your past. Hell, you could be anyone you wanted to be but Azaria always opted for herself. Still, it was nice to see that he wasn’t trying so desperately to achieve one thing. She looked away from him so she wouldn’t seem so ill-mannered.
It was only seconds that he was chuckling and she immediately looked up to meet his gaze, smiling slightly. His response made her laugh quietly but as soon as one particular statement reached her ears, she was gone for. “I’m not so sure I’d want to be involved in what those lonely men come up with.” With that mere statement alone and the playful smile he had given her, Azaria laughed for a moment before calming down. He was probably thanking his lucky stars that this wasn’t the case. Of course, Azaria was still grinning. What a sight it would be to see the men ambling around with no clue what to do with themselves. Besides, women couldn’t live without men so it all evened out from then on.
“That’s cool, I never tried western.” Azaria’s eyes widened and her grinning was replaced with a shocked expression. He never tried western? It shouldn’t have been such a large surprise, western wasn’t exactly the most fanciful thing on the shelf next to English and certainly a lot less glamorous but still, she was shocked. She had ridden western when she started riding and then shifted over to the English saddle. From then on, she had a knack for riding and a few rodeo scouts wanted her when she was sixteen but her father told them off. He wasn’t going to let his daughter let it all go to her head, but even more so, he didn’t want her put on a bull. They had wanted her to try it but her father would carry her off before she even had a chance to answer. Then she was showing under the English saddle and some lost interest because she was talented in another aspect. ”You what,” she asked him but then he explained himself. The shock smoothed out and she nodded. ”My dad trained Thoroughbreds and still does back in Kentucky.” He was the reason she had bought herself a Thoroughbred for her first horse, as well as exercising them. She loved the speed of western and that leaked over into the English saddle ways as well. It gave her a thrill and being an adrenaline junky, she was hooked.
She stretched absent mindedly, letting her muscles expand so they wouldn’t feel too stiff. The achy feeling was subsiding and she was grateful for that. Looks like her lessons would continue and she had no opportunity to head home and change. Oh, what a lucky lady she was! Azaria glanced down at his knee as he looked at it as well. It wasn’t so bad now like it had been before but he’d be bruised for quite a while. When her inquiry hung in the air, Travis looked as though he hadn’t heard her correctly or wished she hadn’t asked such a thing. Azaria was slightly notorious for traipsing over unmarked territories but to her, her question was an innocent one. Now it seemed that it wasn’t the case by the blank expression on his face. She was going to quickly apologize, going to tell him that he needn’t answer it if he felt uncomfortable but he was beginning to smile. She gave him a questioning stare. Men confused her too much sometimes and this was one of those times; however, her interest was piqued.
He began to move, taking his time to get to his feet with a smile still upon his lips. Azaria gave him an unsure smile, trying to figure out why he had such a sudden change in heart from the deer caught in the headlights look to he was just going to smile at her and stand up. It was then that he withdrew his wallet, searching through it for what seemed to be an evasive animal living in it. Her interest was still building and she still studied him as he spoke. She nodded at his statement as he continued to browse through his contents. “I stopped riding three years ago.” The words left his lips without so much as a second though and Azaria’s jaw was slightly agape. He stopped riding?! He was crazy it seemed but she watched him reveal newspaper clippings and it was then that he didn’t seem to have lost his sanity. Azaria put her life in danger to live. Being in the saddle was where she belonged and she had her chances to go pro but she could never give up being on the back of a horse and working as a team. It was what kept her going through the rough times life dealt her. She kept her gaze steady on them as he glanced at them. He walked towards her, handing them to her and hesitantly she took them from him with an unsure expression lingering on her face.
She flipped through them, her eyes taking in the headlines and the explanation that accompanied it. It was soon that her unsure expression shifted into one of near horror as the fall of the mare and rider was given. There was a picture of Travis on one of them and as if still residing in skepticism she flicked her gaze to his face. His features matched up to a point and she was deep in thought. He looked slightly familiar, and then it was when it hit her. ”He used to talk about you,” she whispered to herself quietly, glancing up at him every so often. ”My father, I mean.” Her explanation was rushed before Azaria rose to her feet. She paced back and forth, still reading the words and then she stopped in front of him, observing him carefully. ”I’m sorry.” Her apology was hesitant and genuine, after all, she felt slightly guilty for putting him on the spot. He had to relive that moment again. She felt helpless for having to apologize for having done so for that it was all she could do. It wasn’t like she had some magical time machine to help him stop it from happening.
Azaria gingerly handed them back to him, walking across the floor before hesitating again. She pivoted on her heels and there was that curiosity again mixed in with the gratitude that Travis had told her himself without really having to speak. The newspapers did it all for him. She opened her mouth as if to speak but quickly bit down on her bottom lip as she took her seat in the chair, this time leaning on the edge. She looked deep in though again, debating something before she looked at him again. ”Do you think you’ll ever ride again,” her question was soft, but it left her in a rush of air. She didn’t want to make him feel awkward but the reason it had been spoken in a quick manner was because she knew if she didn’t speak in that way she wouldn’t have even finished her sentence. ”Just curious. You have the right not to answer it,” she added on hurriedly, in case he felt like she was prying but in all honesty, Azaria wanted to know and if he decided not to disclose such personal information then she would be fine with that. She glanced down at the floorboards, letting her eyes take in the woodwork as her mind whirred with the words on the clippings and what he could have endured through that timeframe.

The look of absolute horror made Travis a bit uneasy about the reaction his new found friend would have towards his past. However, it seemed he made that impression, no matter who told his story. Sure it was unfortunate, but that’s life. Shit happens and you can’t go back and change it. Besides, there’s not much he could do about what happened even if he could go back in time. He would do everything the exact same way. But what if he knew? Knew that he was about to come as close to death as he did. Travis thought this through. Would he have still taken the offer and rode the prized mare? That question has haunted him every single day for the last three years. He always tries to convince himself that he would have never rode that day if he knew, but deeper down he knows that he would’ve taken the chance anyways. He was so fearless back then. The idea that something as tragic as his accident could happen to him was a distant nightmare. He was young, and when you’re young you feel like your unbreakable. Let’s just say that Travis has grown up a bit due to his misfortunes.
Travis waited patiently for a reaction from the blonde sitting opposite him. He watched her intently as she read deep into the articles, his blue eyes reading along. He knew those articles word for word, he’d read them so many times. He never really understood his impulse to carry them with him everywhere he went. He figured that they were helpful reminders of why he shouldn’t ride. Or maybe they were for these types of situations, sharing his story? Either way, he always had them on his person, just in case.
The response that she finally uttered wasn’t a surprising one. Her father spoke of him. Yeah, he heard that a lot. Everyone seemed to recall the accident that happened three years ago. Why wouldn’t they? His face was all over the national news stations and in all the major newspapers. He had become a celebrity from it. It seemed that Azaria had finally realized his identity. It’s funny that she thought that she was talking to a total stranger yet she knows just as much if not more about the person before her than that person himself does. Travis raised a brow as he watched Azaria rise from her chair and pace across the room, her brown eyes still plastered to the old clippings. As she paced, Travis observed the floorboards beneath his feet. His arms rested on his thighs, hands locked as if praying. He diverted his fascination from the floor boards to the blonde now standing straight across from him. His icy blue eyes looked into hers as the words of apology reached his ears.
“I’m sorry.”
A completely typical response. Although, what else was she supposed to say? Travis let his head nod in thanks before he spoke up for the first time in several minutes, “I’d do it all over again if I could,” he paused taking the clippings and scanning them quickly again. He stored them carefully back in the brown wallet before speaking again. “It was unfortunate, but everything happens for a reason, I guess.”
Silence filled the small room as Travis thought of what to say next. He knew that she was lost for words and he felt almost the same way. Looking up at her again he gave a faint smile and stood up. Travis let his arms sink into the sleeves of his black t-shirt and pulled the soft cotton over his head. What should have been plain muscle was tainted with scars of numerous sizes across his chest. Sure, his muscles were impressive (that’s what you get for lifting hay bales), but not nearly as impressive as the scars that ran across them. Rubbing his hand along the scars that ran along his rib cage he spoke, “I broke four ribs,” he paused, moving his hand up to his chest where a long scar ran vertically, “I punctured my right lung,” he looked up at her before moving his hand up near his neck, “I fractured my collar bone in three places,” he paused hoping that the site of his scars weren’t too overwhelming, but pressed on anyways. Turning around, his back towards her, Travis ran his rough hand along the scar on his shoulder, “I dislocated my left shoulder,” he smiled before turning to face her again. Running his hand near where his jeans met his skin, another scar emblazed in the skin, he spoke one last time, “And that’s where they went in to reset my broken pelvis. I also suffered a severe concussion.” With a sigh, Travis sat back down on the couch. Why was he so open with her? Maybe it was that aspect of her being “real”. He was sure of it.
Pulling his black t-shirt back over the blazing scars he listened to her next daunting question. He ran his fingers through his hair before speaking. “It’s fine,” he said lightly. She seemed to be regretting even bringing the topic of his accident up. She shouldn’t have felt bad, he actually was feeling relieved. “Honestly, no.” he paused watching her for a moment to see her reaction. “Don’t get me wrong, I loved riding.” He paused again, sighing. “But sometimes you’ve got to let go of the things you love.” He smiled shakily before continuing,"I’ve been cleared to ride for nearly two years now, but I can’t get myself to do it.” He stopped hoping Azaria would do some of the talking.

Azaria had seen Travis from time to time, especially whenever her father shoved the newspaper into her face and went ranting on about whatever he felt like but did that mean she knew him? No, she would never in a million years to have thought she’d be sitting across from him, speaking to him as though he was just another person and he was. Her father didn’t seem to think so, always talking about him and his most recent win, sometimes poking fun at Ria to show him up in the ring. Maybe that was why she didn’t go pro. The competitions and conditioning every moment you breathed would take the passion she had for the sport itself out of the game. She would lose interest in the thing that meant the most to her, the thing that helped her secretly cope with her mother leaving her behind. No one knew that about her that from time to time Azaria thought about her, wondering faintly if she even remembered she had a daughter. She exhaled, the floorboards becoming less pleasing to her vision as they sent her into a whirlwind of the past, flashes of images that were never compete confusing her.
She looked up at him then, opting that it would be better than staring at the woodwork at her feet. She was sure he had heard it all. Her answers were typical and nothing out of the norm. She never followed him personally; she was too wrapped up in her own riding to even focus on all the others. She did hear fragments of people chattering, mostly the girls that boarded their horses at the barn opposite where the Thoroughbreds resided. All she remembered was them gushing on about how cute he was and everything else. She was just there to ride and let go of whatever was bothering her. She wasn’t like them and it had always been that way. She sighed, letting her fingers press to her temples to remove all the issues that were now rising. He was still a stranger and what people had said about him didn’t affect her. This was in the here and now and whatever happened in the past couldn’t be changed. Azaria still looked at him the same way. He was still someone she didn’t know but yet, she felt like she had gained a friend somehow and in some way. It felt like she could trust him and he the same. He had shared a life changing experience with him rather openly, and it was normally Azaria who was like an open book.
After Azaria uttered the helpless and probably meaningless apology, he nodded. He was speaking to her and she let her hands rest on her knee, permitting her chin to rest in her open hand. In his position, she might have done it all over again as well. It was the slight moment of fame and the thrill of a new mount that would keep her going. He put the clippings back into his wallet, storing them for the next time they were to be taken out. She couldn’t speak even if she was willing herself to. It was unfortunate that it had happened to him and she would never wish it on anyone else. Azaria looked at him, now finding herself to be the deer in the headlights. She couldn’t ask him anything more because her mind was halting in the midst of their conversation. She had never been found to be so speechless in her life and now, this was new to her. Half of her wanted to say anything even if it was random and the other half of her wanted to stay silent, to listen and take in what was being said. So, she stayed quiet, her eyes calmly calculating as they studied his features.
The silence then filled the atmosphere, leaving Azaria feeling a bit uncomfortable. She disliked silence for multiple reasons. She hated the feeling of being slightly awkward. If only she could find her voice she could shatter it but she didn’t. Her eyes were glued onto him it seemed, gazing at him with brown eyes that seemed to be tumbling with numerous emotions that could be read into. Travis was moving at that time, and she watched him faintly as he removed his shirt. She looked at him with bewilderment and then understood. She stood at that moment and her legs moved towards him and she stopped within a foot of him, observing the scars that riddled his body. She observed the puckered skin as she rocked back and forth on her heels. She glanced to his face as he explained what each one was what every single scar had led to. Scars didn’t bother Azaria as much as it should have with others. She had seen blood and protruding bones, majority of the time being her own, so she was used to it. She had no sensation of any queasy feeling let her eyes follow the scars as he moved his hand across them. Part of her wanted to trace them but she resisted it. Travis turned, exposing the back of him to point out where another scar lay where he dislocated his shoulder blade. She grimaced faintly. She had dislocated her shoulder multiple times and all those times she popped it right back in.
As he turned around, Azaria met his eyes for a moment before drifting towards where his hand was now lingering. He was smiling at her slight and she gave him a weak smile in return. She had never seen anything like it. She had never seen a body filled with stories told by scars. She exhaled the breath she had been holding in as he sat back down on the couch. She observed him before crossing back over to the other side of the room to sit down on the chair again. She studied him still, wondering as to why he was telling her all this. She supposed it was mostly on her behalf as she did seem to have provoked him into telling her by her questions, then again, she was happy that he had found some sort of reason to confide to her. Her eyes glimmered back towards her water bottle as she fidgeted with it for a moment, letting her mind turn over what she had recently seen. She had never been through something like that, nor had she ever seen anything quite like that. He seemed like a good natured person and something horrendous happened to him. She frowned then, her smile dissipating below the surface. It seemed odd and out of place on her face but she watched him put back on his t-shirt for a moment longer than she probably should have.
”Honestly, no.”
The words haunted Azaria’s mind, echoing within it as if he had spoken down a long and narrow tunnel. She met his eyes with a blank expression but her eyes betrayed her. They revealed what she was truly feeling regret, a bit of guilt, and multiple others that mixed together to be indecipherable. She still kept her eyes on him as he went on to explain himself. He loved riding but if he loved it so much, why give it up? He was confusing her even more but even so, she felt herself still interested in him as a human. Naturally, she had never met someone like him, and have someone be so open with her as if they had known each other for practically all their lives but why did he chose her to be so open with? If it was her, she would keep that closed off unless she truly felt comfortable but then she realized something, she felt comfortable around him. ”Can’t bring yourself to do it because of fear,” she inquired softly, moving her eyes towards the floorboards again. A small smile flitted onto her lips as she exhaled once again. ”Well, I can certainly say I’ve never seen a guy get half-naked when I first met him.” There was laugh to loosen the tension and she relaxed, leaning back into the chair and looking at him with laughter in her eyes. ”You’ve made quite the impression,” she teased, grinning at him playfully.

He had a feeling that Azaria was just as confused as he was about his willingness to open up to her. It was strange, he usually hated talking to people for the simple fact that they always ended up talking about him. This time, however, he seemed to not be able to stop talking about himself. He almost felt that he was rambling. Ah well. At least Azaria didn't seem to mind. He could still tell that her curiosity was lingering just from her expressions. It's true, he was an interesting being, and he basically escaped death. However, once you've told the story as many times as he had you begin to realize just how close you came to not being able to tell the story at all.
There was a long silence between them. Travis sat contently, he wanted everything that he told and showed Azaria to sink in before he continued. He had been surprised by her nearly nonexistent reaction to his scars. Usually when he showed someone they came close to tears, not Azaria. She simply stared blankly at them as he traced them with his fingers. A much better and more relaxed reaction than he was used to. Even now with his shirt covering his chest he could feel the red lines pulsing against his skin. That was one thing he truly hated, his scars. They were such a prominent reminder of what was and it made him uneasy. He could easily dispose of the newspaper clippings he kept in his wallet but those scars would remain burnt into his skin until the day he died.
Fear. The word hit him like a thousand stinging bees. He looked up from the magazines he was admiring on the coffee table and smiled unconciencly. Great, now she thinks he's haunted by fear. Yeah, ok, he was haunted by fear but that's not something he wanted to be known for. He sighed before responding, "Yeah fear and I, unlike you and the ground, aren't best friends. We tend to have opposing views." he gave a sft chuckle. It was true, he had a torn will but fear usually won most of the time.
”Well, I can certainly say I’ve never seen a guy get half-naked when I first met him.”
”You’ve made quite the impression,”
The air lightened slightly at these words that completely humored him. He momentarily recalled taking his shirt off without a second thought mere moments earlier, yeah, that was kind of spontaneous. He started laughing hysterically and held his now aching stomach. Wow, this one really brought out his happy-go-lucky side that was so seldom seen. He waited until his laughter ceased before continuing. "It's what I do," he said matter-a-factly betweeen outbursts of laughter. "Actually, it's this new suduction technique I'm trying out. It has proven to work in most cases," he successfully kept a serious face as he continued, "You see, first I tell you my sob story, with evidence to back it up of course," he patted his wallet that sat on the table and continued, "Now you feel bad for me. Then I take my shirt off to show you my hardcore, sexy scars." he paused raising an eyebrow, "Now you're interested." He smiled charmingly, laughter about to explode from his lungs. "So the only thing left is for you to explode from the rageing hormones and sleep with me. End of story, hook, line, sinker." The smile that stamped his lips was one of udder humor. He knew she would laugh, that was his goal after all. With one last attempt to make her explode he said rather teasingly, "So now that you know how this works, my place or yours?" He couldn't contain it any longer and let the chuckles billow between his pearly teeth.
Travis sat deep into the cushions, a charmingly beautiful smile streaked across his face. That's one thing he was good at, making people laugh. He found it to be a very helpful quality to have. It seemed that a good sense of humor made everything easier. After regaining control of himself he spoke again, voice squeeky due to the lake of air he was taking in, "You know, I haven't laughed this much in a long time," he stopped, his blue eyes staring into her brown ones. He felt so much happier with laughter back in his life.

Where Travis might have felt he was rambling, Azaria was taking it all in. She was listening to what he said, storing it away. She didn’t feel the need to interject, allowing him to have the podium so to speak so he could express what he was feeling in that way of his. She knew men weren’t exactly the most emotional type of people but most had their discreet ways to let others know how they were feeling. It was then that her curiosity had been lulled and turned into a look of peace and contentment. She was just waiting for the next time her curiosity would pique again. It would only be a matter of time that was for sure.
When she had been viewing his scars, he almost seemed taken aback by the little reaction she had given him. She did have a bit of empathy for him, but to say she would go out into sobs about it wasn’t what she would do. It was horrifying, yes, but he had recovered. She had a tendency to focus on the positives. He was living, breathing, and walking around rather than buried six feet under the ground. For that, Azaria was thinking about. Sure he may have been branded for life, a constant reminder of the past that he would think about from time to time, but he had defeated death and came from the brink of never returning. She shifted in her seat, eyeing him as he looked up from the magazines spread across the table. He smiled at the moment of her question but sighed as well. She watched him calmly from where she was sitting and listened as he spoke. She gave a small smile as he spoke about his fear and himself not exactly being the best of friends. ”That’s understandable,” she said quietly. Even if she had gone through what he had, would she stay grounded and grow fearsome of being on a horse? Maybe but then again, she would never know.
Azaria was grateful for her quick wit and superb sense of humor. She had a knack for making others laugh, brightening their spirits whenever they were down in the dumps. The awkward silence was ebbing away and now, laughter filled the air. He was laughing, clutching his stomach as if he was going to pass out from lack of oxygen. She grinned proudly and laughed along with him. Slowly, his laughter faded away and hers did as well. She looked down at the bottle and tossed it into the recycle bin. She listened as it clattered into it amongst all the others. She then turned her head to gaze at Travis and it was just in time, he was speaking once again. So, it was what he did. Oh, what an interesting piece of information. She smiled at him lightly, listening to him continue on with a rather serious face; however, Azaria wasn’t so easily bought over.
She was amazed that he had spoken for so long without breaking out into a fit of laughter. She just watched him speak but it wasn’t long before that smile turned into a mischievous one. If he wanted to play like this, Azaria could bring it back twice as hard. "So the only thing left is for you to explode from the ragging hormones and sleep with me. End of story, hook, line, sinker." How cocky he sounded but with that reputable smile on his lips, she knew it was all out of teasing. She contained her laughter, attempting to look at him with almost flirtatious eyes as if he was dragging her in. On her behalf, she did quite a damn good job at it but the smile that was twisting on her mouth gave her away. "So now that you know how this works, my place or yours?" With that, she bit on her lower lip and the mischievousness grew. It glinted within her eyes and she sat forwards, listening to himself laugh rowdily at what had been spoken. She smirked at him and looked around the lounge before shrugging. ”Or we could do it here. Y’know, with my raging hormones and all I might not last for very long until I jump your bones.” She gave a small laugh before standing to her feet and crossing the room.
He had asked for it. She sat down daringly on the coffee table, directly in front of him. Her voice lowered to a whisper, moving slightly towards him. ”I have to warn you though, once you get a taste of me, you won’t ever want anyone else. I am pretty addictive,” her voice was dangerously seductive. There was a challenging glint to her eyes and she smirked at him for a moment. Azaria winked at him playfully before she permitted the laughter to pass through her. Her shoulders quaked with her the hysterical laughter moving through her. It was soon that she moved her face away from his where just moments before, was roughly five inches away. She gave him another wink before questioning him. ”You think you can handle this?” Her eyebrows quirked and she laughed even harder now, shifting away from him slightly so she was positioned on the outer edge of the table. He regained his composure and Azaria did as well. She looked at him, her eyes still sparking with laughter and a smile on her lips. When Travis talked again, it sounded like he was going through puberty again. Another laugh escaped her and she shook her head gently. ”Neither have I,” she agreed with a grin. ”Stick around and it’ll be something you get used to.” She held his gaze for a moment, staring into his blue eyes before standing to her feet. She sat down on the other end of the couch he was sitting on, feeling even more comfortable around to have the ability to sit in the same vicinity. She sunk into the cushions and exhaled quietly. Who would’ve thought she would meet someone in the lounge while they both were in slight pain? Azaria was sure glad it happened.

The pain Travis had felt a mere hour ago had now subsided. Laughter was a cure for all evil, that was especially true in this situation. There had been a lack of happiness in Travis' life since that dredded day three years ago. Today, however, it semmed like that happiness had never left him. It was funny how some people meet. Bumping into them at the grochery store or meeting each other in akward situations where no one knows anyone. This was one of thosetimes. It seemed like this meeting between Travis and Azaria was meant to be. All that ex- show jumper knew was that he was glad he had met this charming southern girl who had a personality as unique as he did.
Travis crossed his arms across his mid-section in hopes to settle his now bubbly stomach. Lack of laughter caused even the slightest chuckle to ignite a flame within him. He smiled though, he couldn't help it. All of a sudden his day had brightened and he couldn't contain his enthusiasm. He leaned back into the couch, arms now crossed behind his head functioning like a hammock. He let his teeth shine from beneathe his lips, his hundred-watt smile. He waited patiently for Azaria to react to his "seduction" technique. He knew she would find it as comical as he did. He could already tell that they had a similar sense of humor and could take a joke.
”Or we could do it here. Y’know, with my raging hormones and all I might not last for very long until I jump your bones.”
This girl was good, and by good I mean really good. She could take a joke and still fight back hard with a hilarious response that nearly brought Travis to tears. He managed to speak, his voice still high from the lack of oxygen he had been taking in, "I knew you'd give in, they all do eventually." Travis ran his hands through his wind blown hair, scratching it to make it look more "wild". He could hardly cease the laughter as he did so. He watched between squinty eyes as she stood up from her chair and stalk towards him. He tried to straighten his features as she took a seat before him on the stocky table. He rubbed his nose akwardly as he waited for her to continue. His bright blue eyes met her brown ones and he knew she was simply "playing" with him.
”I have to warn you though, once you get a taste of me, you won’t ever want anyone else. I am pretty addictive,”
Her words came as a whisper. The sound of those lyrics made the hairs on the back of Travis' neck stand straight up. Her face was only several inches from his own. He let his facial features relax, he wasn't gonna laugh.
”You think you can handle this?”
Travis' brow raised mysteriously at her words. She quickly was brought to laughter, a was he. She backed away from him ever so slightly, he almost wishe she hadn't. He used every ounce of self control he had left to keep from laughing as she stood from the table top and walked away from him. She stated that she hardly ever laughed this much too, good, atleast he wasn't the only one. His eyes watched her take a seat on the other end of the couch. He nodded charmingly in her direction and stood up.
Travis walked across the room, pulling his i-pod from his front pocket. A set of speakers sat contently on th shelf. He approached them and plugged his own device into the connection dock. He looked over his shoulder at Azaria, winked, and then continued to shuffle through the nearly three hundred songs he had listed in that darn contraption. He finally settled for one. With the selection made a soft, waltz like tune flooded from the speakers. Turning back to face Azaria he walked towards her, withholding a straight face the whole way across the room. He chuckled, "I'm the highly physical type so the real question is are you able to handle me, miss Azaria?" he paused a loose smile treading across his lips, "Most girls can't keep up," he laughed, but only softly through his teeth. Stretching out a hand, Travis spoke one last time, "Just concider this a test," he winked charmingly at Azaria, knowing she would accept his offer to dance. "Unless, that is, you don't think you can keep up," he paused, lowering his hand, "It's understadable, I am quite the dancer." he started walking away, back towards the speakers, "Or so I'm told."

It was hard to stop smiling and even with Azaria having been so used to consistently laughing, it was just different this time around. It was to the point that if she continued smiling it just might as well freeze to her face at any moment. Her cheeks were hurting from all the laughter that had been reverberating around the room for quite some time. It was still a bit strange to her how they had gone from what may have been the most serious conversation to just about keeled over from them throwing words at one another just to see who could out do each other in a way. Basically, that only led to even more hysterics between the pair. With every comment, the laughter was at an all-time high. She wondered fleetingly if people walking by outside heard the bouts of laughter at all. One thing was for certain, she didn’t doubt it.
Then again, she was pretty grateful that they didn’t want to stop in to see what exactly was so hilarious. It would have destroyed that moment, allowing it to shatter onto the floor. Azaria gazed at him expectantly, searching his face for the smallest reaction to her newly spoken words. Surely, he would be bound to laugh all over again. He leaned backwards, placing his head into his palms, giving her a fairly broad smile. Her smile only increased then, knowing full well that he was probably enjoying this as much as she was. Wherever there was laughter, Azaria would surely be in the mix. Then there was the reaction she had been waiting for. Travis’s laughter swirled around her and she grinned at him when he spoke in a squeaky voice, still recovering from his inability to have enough oxygen to sound “normal” again. "I knew you'd give in, they all do eventually." This made her laugh quietly to herself. ”Then again, I could be mean and drive you crazy until you couldn’t contain yourself anymore.” She leaned back slightly and where there was once a typical innocent smile now had turned into a wicked grin. Azaria could be quite the tease at times, in fact, had been pointedly told a few times that she was.
He messed with his hair, still laughing as she moved across the room to sit in front of him. She saw him try to adjust face to look at her without any sort of smile, to become as straight faced as possible. Once her words escaped her, she openly watched him, awaiting a flicker of something to appear. He had successfully allowed his face to smooth out but then there was a raise of his brow which was a pretty good reaction to have been given. With having now been seated at the opposite end of the couch, he turned in her direction to nod at her. She had been half-expecting him to say something but she had not been expecting him to stand up. She watched him reach in his pocket, pulling out a device she could not see from her location, though he was heading towards the speakers. What the heck was he doing? Then, there was that persistent curiosity again. He looked over his shoulder at her, winking at her before directing his attention back to what she had now identified as an iPod. Oh gosh, what was he doing now? Was this another part of his “seduction” scheme?
After browsing through his song selection, a soft waltz-like song began playing softly from the speakers. He turned to her then, striding across the room in her direction. Azaria followed him as he stopped in front of her and listened as he chuckled before speaking once more. "I'm the highly physical type so the real question is are you able to handle me, miss Azaria?" She glanced at him evenly before nodding with a smile on her face. "Most girls can't keep up," This only made her smile widen and she gave a subtle laugh. ”Well, I suppose it’s a great thing I’m not like the other girls.” There was a tiny glint to her eyes, emphasizing her point further. He stretched out his hand, bringing it towards her a degree. Azaria gave a bold smile as he winked at her. ”Consider your test aced.” There was that courageous smile of hers that seemed to able to take on any and all challenges. After all, Azaria wasn’t exactly known for turning down a challenge of any sort and so as he continued to state if she didn’t think she could keep up, she rose to her feet and smiled. His hand lowered and she looked at him. ”Show me what you got, dancer-boy.” The words fell playfully off her lips as she walked up towards him. Oh, this was going to be good.

He liked her. He really liked her. He hadn’t had this sort of feeling around a girl since, well, before the accident. Heck, he hadn’t had a REAL girlfriend since high school. Horses were his life and girls usually hated the fact that his horses came first. Understandable, I suppose. I mean, in all reality, his horses were enough company, he hated being dragged down by a needy girl. The fact that he couldn’t buy her nice things also seemed to be a good reason for them to part. By them he meant he and his long time high school girlfriend. They had seemed to be perfect for each other, although they fought a lot. She seemed to have a problem with all the attention Travis got from girls twenty four seven. Hey, it wasn’t his fault that he was born with wicked good looks and an equally good personality. By October of their senior year he couldn’t take it anymore. Travis dumped her the day before homecoming, just to be a smart ass and prove a point. He wasn’t at all surprised to see that she managed to round up a man to bring. She, however, was horrified to learn that he could do the same. All Travis had to do was ask any girl at school who didn’t have a date, he managed to get a cheerleader to go with him. Let’s just say he and that long time girlfriend never spoke again. That’s right, he won.
As he turned away from Azaria he could only hope she would get up and follow. He was such a tease sometimes. Now wonder girls always rolled over for him, even if he wasn’t interested (which was most of the time). However, today, for the first time in years, interest had ignited inside him.
”Well, I suppose it’s a great thing I’m not like the other girls.” & ”Consider your test aced.”
He stopped turning to face her once more, a smile breaking his once stern features.
”Show me what you got, dancer-boy.”
He laughed at the name “dancer-boy”. She made him laugh without much effort, which he loved. He waited as she approached him, smile still shining bright as ever. Grabbing her hand, he spun her into him and then out again. He placed his left hand on her waist and held her hand in his free one. The soft music continued to murmur in the background. “You know, I am lucky you’re not like other girls,” he smiled, raising his arms and spinning her through it. “If you were like the others I would have gotten my ass whopped when I even suggested that mare’s were like typical women,” he paused, taking soft steps across the wooden floors. “However, the other girls would have already agreed to sleep with me but then regretted it when they realized what a good dancer I was,” he raised his chin in a self satisfied manner as the duo spun around the room.
After a few moments, the music stopped. Travis took a step away from Azaria and bowed in an almost pre-colonial style. He raised his head to reveal that beautiful smile once again. “You passed,” he said, a chuckle billowing behind the words. Walking back to the couch, he sunk into the cushions once more. Turning to face Azaria he spoke again, “You know I grew up in Kentucky as well.” He paused, a chuckle passed through his body. “So,” he started, raising a brow at Azaria, “What did your old man tell you about me?” he was simply curious, that’s all. “I mean, you probably know more about me now than he ever did,” he smiled mischievously and continued, “That I’m good at seducing women, for example.”
